Flu No More Some big news is coming out of the University of Texas Southwestern. The scientists there have created a new flu vaccine that is a “catch-all” vaccine. This means that the vaccine will protect against any type of flu and not just one strain. The bigger news is that this also means it can protect us against the flu if it mutates. Mutation is a common problem with current flu vaccines. Current vaccines are created to protect against one type of the flu but if the virus mutates, it is rendered useless. The new vaccine targets a protein in our bodies that, when increased, makes it near impossible for the virus to invade cells. This applies to all flu viruses and not just one type. According to the scientists, the new vaccine can protect us from the Spanish Flu, which caused one of the biggest losses of life from a disease worldwide in 1918, as well as more recent strains like the Swine Flu. The new vaccine is not ready for distribution yet, however this may be the first step to one day putting an end to the flu once and for all.
The Day The Internet Stood Still The Internet, that wonderful network that seems to always stay strong, took a bit of a stumble last Monday morning. A software glitch in the “Border Gateway Protocol” created a series of events that took out networks across the globe. One network to suffer a massive but short-lived outage was Time Warner Cable, one of the largest internet providers in the US. The issues originated further up in the Internet’s hierarchy, as one of the key Internet gateways into the US crashed. Juniper Networks, who create routers for larger networks, seemed to be the source of the issue. Luckily most networks were back by late morning, proving the Internet can be very resilient and recover quickly.
Nuked This is something that might keep you awake at night. According to the paper “Beyond the United Kingdom: Trends in Other Nuclear States”, mankind has created a total 128,000 nuclear weapons since 1945. A whopping 98% of that number have belonged to the United States and the Soviet Union/Russia. In case you’re crunching the numbers, that leaves 2,560 created by other nations. Of these nations, Israel, North Korea, Pakistan, India, and China don’t disclose any of their nuclear information, while the UK and France do. That’s a lot of “Where are those nukes?… I don’t know”. As of 2010 the original 128,000 nukes have luckily been decreased to only 22,400, 95% of which belong to the US and Russia. Despite the massive drop in arsenal, a small fraction of that 22,400 could result in all out nuclear annihilation. Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, huh? Then we went on to run the Audio/Video Playback test and man, is this laptop in trouble...
But, once again...we just clicked the "Troubleshoot" button and it told us how to fix it. Just a reminder - if you don't understand what's wrong, you can always print out or email the diagnostics by clicking the "More Info" button. How do I turn the DMA back on in Windows 7 Home Premium? Hello Duke, thanks for the great question. You will be glad to know that it is easy to turn the DMA back on in Windows 7 Home Premium. Before we get started, make sure you are logged on as an administrator or you will not be able to perform the following steps. What is DMA? DMA, also known as Direct Memory Access, allows peripheral devices in computers to send data to the memory on the motherboard without any type of intervention from the CPU. The DMA controllers are embedded into the chip in modern processors, and manage data transfers. DMA is used to help speed up a computer and allow you to multitask. When you enable DMA, it allows you to read/write data in the external memory, internal memory, and peripherals, without any involvement from the CPU, which leaves the processor open to do other tasks. DMA is normally turned on by default for your hard disk, and DVD or CD drives, if they support DMA. If a device is improperly installed or you have a system error, you may need to turn DMA on manually. Enable DMA Click the Start button in the lower left corner, click Control Panel, click System and Security, and then click Device Manager link in the System section. The Device Manager window opens. You may be prompted to enter your administrator password. Click next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers in the left pain to collapse it. The menu will expand and you will see other options. Find each icon that has the word Channel as part of the label in the list. Right-click each icon with the word Channel, and select Properties.
Click the Advanced Settings tab, and select the Enable DMA check box to check it. Click OK to save the changes.
DMA should now be enabled on your Windows 7 Home Premium computer. We hope this tip has been helpful for you. ~Rita  MS Excel: A Locked Cell is Not a Cell Protected From Changes If you’ve ever found yourself nosing around the Protection tab in the Format Cells dialog box then you’ve probably found that the Locked check-box was selected and possibly thought that your worksheet was safe from changes made by others…
Whew! We’re safe – right?? Well, not really. Locked isn’t actually protecting the cells from change, it’s marking those cells that should be protected from user changes if you actually choose to protect the worksheet. By default, the entire worksheet is selected as locked – but not actually protected. Read on by clicking here! Navigation is easy! You click on the categories to change what’s being searched for. The default is set to Top Restaurant Deals in My City, but you can change it to What’s Good on the Menu?, or I Have a Craving for a Special Dish just by clicking on those options. Top Restaurant Deals in My City – this section is by far the most limited.
