Quick Tips

Run As Administrator Keyboard Shortcut

It’s a fact that sometimes a program in Windows needs “Administrator Rights” to open up. Thankfully Windows 7 and Vista added a feature that when you right-click on certain programs, you’ll automatically have the option to “Run as Administrator”.

image

Well, did you know that you can also just hold Ctrl+Shift while left clicking on a program to achieve the same effect?

Well, you can! So, save yourself a little bit of extra time and just hold Ctrl+Shift when you click on something that needs Administrator Rights to open!

New Computer? GREAT!

How Will You Transfer Files and Programs Over From Your Old One?

A Transfer Cable, You Say?

OK - But Transfer Cables ONLY Transfer Files!

What About ALL of Those EXPENSIVE Software Programs?

What's The Matter? Why Are You Freaking Out?!

We've Got EXACTLY What You Need!

LAPLINK TO THE RESCUE!

Move EVERYTHING Over to Your New PC: Files AND Software Programs!

UNBELIEVABLY EASY TO USE!

Save Yourself HOURS - Even DAYS of Hassles - and a TON of Money!

Works With WHATEVER YOU'VE GOT - XP, Vista, Windows...

Can You Push a Button? THEN YOU CAN DO THIS!

A Frightening Little Story...

Bill just got a new computer. He's SUPER excited, and can't wait to get it booted up. Slamming the door behind him and throwing his keys on the table, he rushes to the living room and starts to unbox that shiny new PC.

In walks his roommate, Fred. Fred knows a thing or two about computers and has no problem giving Bill advice - even though he can be quite smug about sharing his knowledge...

"Hey Fred! Check it out - I FINALLY got a new computer!" Bill says, eagerly awaiting approval from his nerdy roommate. "It's SO much better than my last one. I can't WAIT to get everything transferred over from that old piece of junk!"

"Well Bill" Fred says in a smug, all knowing voice, "that's a nice idea and all, but how are you going to transfer everything over just using that old transfer cable of yours?"

With his face starting to redden, Bill stammers "Wait...wha-what do you mean how? I've got that cable thingy...it'll do the trick, right Fred? RIGHT?"

"Wrong!" Fred laughs. "That thing'll only transfer over your files. What about all of that expensive software you've invested so much money in, Bill? What about that? How do you think you'll get that transferred over?"

...SILENCE...

After letting Bill suffer in silence for a few moments, Fred introduces Bill to LAPLINK PC MOVER WITH CABLE...

The most INGENIOUS program EVER created for PC users!

If you are planning on getting a new PC any time in the near future - LapLink PC Mover is AN ABSOLUTE MUST-HAVE! If you're buying a new computer with Windows 7 on it - it's even MORE important that you have this! Here's why!

Move EVERYTHING From Your Old PC to Your New One With EASE!

This awesome software lets you transfer everything - from your files to your software programs - onto your new computer. Most transfer cables only let you transfer over old files...but what about all of that IMPORTANT software that you've spent a FORTUNE on?

Moving files is simple - moving software is not. In fact, it's nearly impossible!

NOT ANYMORE!

When most software is installed, you get components and pieces of the software scattered all over your hard drive .

Manually finding every part and putting it back on a new computer, placed where it should be and registered with Windows is almost impossible.

UPGRADING FROM XP TO 7? WANNA KEEP ALL FILES AND SOFTWARE? READ ON!

This is the ONLY program on the planet that allows you to do an upgrade from XP to Windows 7 while keeping ALL of your files and software!

Why? Because for some reason, Microsoft will NOT support a direct upgrade path to Win7 from XP. You can buy it, but once you install it - you're in for a nasty surprise! You'll be told that ALL of your software is now gone, and that it'll try to relocate it. It can't. Hope you backed everything up..

That's right - if you're using XP (and some versions of Vista) the "upgrade" to Windows 7 will DUMP ALL YOUR SOFTWARE!!!

GUESS WHAT? This is the ONLY software that solves that HORRIBLE problem!

Everything will be there when you've finished, and all of your data will be where it should be! LapLink PC Mover is like a MIRACLE!

The Test Results BLEW US AWAY!

Before we get started on a test run for you, just know this: all you need to know in order to successfully run this program is....how to click your mouse!

Step 1: install the software on both PC's

VERY EASY! Now just attach them with the INCLUDED USB cable. SIMPLE!

Ready to start making decisions? Go ahead! Exclude any files you don't want to keep. Wanna keep all of your data file folders? Leave the check marks in the little boxes, and they'll be kept!

Step 2: Let LapLink scan and find ALL of your old software!

When it's done, it'll give you a list with check boxes - leave checks in the ones you want to transfer over to your new PC. It's THAT EASY! Being able to select only the programs you want to transfer is AMAZING!

Oh, it even tells you when you already have the same software on your new PC (this program will not overwrite existing files, so you don't need to worry about data loss).

Step 3: Walk away and let LapLink do it's thing!

Once you've selected everything you want transferred over, your job is done! Now LapLink will AUTOMATICALLY transfer EVERYTHING you asked it to!

This obviously takes some time - especially if you're transferring large amounts of date. No big deal! The easiest solution is to let it run over night - when you get up in the morning, your new computer will be decked out and ready to go!

IT'S LIKE CHRISTMAS!

NOT PLANNING ON GETTING A NEW PC TODAY? YOU STILL NEED THIS!

The software is upgradable to the newest version whenever you decide to make the switch! So, if you're planning on a new PC anytime in the future, grab this title now and stick it on your shelf!

If PC Answers Magazine says it's awesome...IT IS!

"Instead of messing around with program installation and data copying , PCmover is the ideal tool for anyone making the change to a new PC."
PC Answers Magazine

READY TO BE BLOWN AWAY? CHECK THE PRICE!

You're not going to find this for anywhere less than 60-80 bucks anywhere...except at Worldstart!

For today only, this BRILLIANT program can be yours for just $16.97 with FREE US SHIPPING!

http://store.worldstart.com/product/3897

PS: Remember, you can get this software now, while it's still available, and not buy your new PC until next year...or how ever long you want - and this program will automatically upgrade itself to the newest version when you install it. How sweet!

Computers 101

Pamela from Florida asks:

Everything I try to click on ask me what program do I want to use with it – like my web cam built in on my laptop. How do I keep this from happening?

When you double-click on a file, your computer will typically already knows which application to ‘run’ that file with. This is determined by the file type of any given file. For example, word documents can commonly end in the file extension ‘.doc.’ On most computers, when these files are double-clicked on, they will be automatically opened with a word processor, such as Microsoft Word, Open Office or iWork. This is because your computer is programmed to have a default program selected for common file types.

Although computers typically come with the proper software capable of opening common file types, you will undoubtedly run into a file type that your computer does not know how to open – or rather that it does not know which program to use to open the file type in question. This commonly occurs with uncommon file types that your computer has never dealt with before, but it can also happen if the default program for a specific file type has been removed. Regardless of what happened, there are easy steps you can take to avoid having to manually choose the program that you wish to use for the same file type each and every time you open a file.

Start by right-clicking on the file that you wish to choose the default program for. From the revealed menu, hover your mouse over “open with” and select “choose default program…”

A window will pop up asking you to select the default program. All major operating systems will give you recommended programs to choose from. From here, you can simply double-click on the correct application. If your desired program is not in the list of recommended programs, you will need to hit the “browse” button and search for the program manually.

NOTE: Make sure that the checkbox, “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file” is checked.

Because most applications are found in the “programs” folder, it’s best to start your search there. Go to “My Computer,” followed by “C://” and open the “programs” folder. From there, you’ll be able to select your desired program. If you are still unable to find the desired application, it’s best to use the search function (circled in the photo below; varies by operating system) to find the program on your computer.

There you have it. Every time you open a file with that particular file extension, it will automatically open it using the program you have chosen as the default program. If you simply cannot find a program that will open your file, you may need to search for a downloadable program from the Web, or purchase a program that will support that file type.

Good luck!

MS Office

MS Outlook: 1 Contact With 2 or 3 E-mail Addresses

Many of us have multiple e-mail addresses… one for home (friends and all the “good stuff”), one for work and yet another for when you’re forced to give one to sign up for something but don’t want all the clutter in with the rest.

It then follows that there are times when you add a contact to Outlook and you want to enter several addresses for the same person.

Sounds simple enough…

We’re off to the Contact section of Outlook, New Contact button and we’re faced with this:

Tip of the Day

Virtual Wi-Fi Networks in Windows 7

In a digital world – which is also increasingly wireless – seamless integration and syncing of devices has become the norm. Consequently, wired internet connections are slowly becoming a thing of the past. The focus is on ease of use and flexibility, and being tied to a LAN port for internet does not fare well on this front. Most homes and office workspaces these days use wi-fi networks and hotspots to connect to the internet. This helps bestow a feeling of mobility on computer users.

Virtual Wi-Fi in Windows 7
However, there are times when you dont have access to a wi-fi hotspot, or rather, have internet on only your laptop, and wish you could share it with other devices such as another laptop / smart phone. Well, Windows 7 has a nifty little hidden feature which will allow you to do just that.

Virtual wi-fi is a relatively unknown feature in Windows 7 which can be put to very good use in such a scenario. Virtual Wi-Fi refers to virtualization of the wireless network adapter or WLAN card, and helps create a virtual network adapter or VWiFi. A software access point known as a Soft AP gets created for the virtual Wi-Fi network. Enabling or disabling either one of the network adapters in Control Panel -> Network and Sharing will result in both of these getting enabled / disabled.

Today's Feature

FastStone Photo Resizer

I’m always on the lookout for image editing software, and had used the Faststone Image Viewer (see Worldstart tip here.) However, I never tried their Photo Resizer. With this, you can quickly convert the sizes or formats of single images or groups of images. While there are many other software applications available which will accomplish this goal, none that I’ve used, do it as easily and reliably as this free program. It also contains some basic editing tools, including rotating and cropping.

To download this software, click here, and you’ll see the FastStone Photo Resizer at the bottom of the page. Follow the directions and when the download is complete, a shortcut is sent to your desktop. Open the program and the first thing you’ll need to do is select the location of the images you want to convert. This is done by clicking on the drive in which your images are located. Then, click on the button to the right of the field above (in red).

One World Journeys: The Jaguar, Lord of Mayan Jungle

Get ready to explore the jungle in hunt of the mysterious jaguar. Join One World Journey’s expedition into the wilds of the Yucatán Peninsula where they’ll explore the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve in search of a jaguar. Along the way they’ll find other rare rainforest animals and discuss why it is integral to protect the jaguar’s habitat.

To get started click Live Expedition on the right side of the page. There you can read more about the journey and use the links on the right side of the page to navigate through all ten days of their expedition.

Back on the main page, if you click Jaguar on the right side you can check out the information on the cat. There is a section on tracking and tagging a jaguar, the mythology surrounding the jaguar, and the role of the cat. I loved this section it was filled with all sorts of information that I did not know before!

The last section to visit from the main page is Jungle Ecology; you’ll find the link on the right side of the page like the others. Here you’ll learn about threats to the jaguar, conservation history, a gallery of eco-images, and the ecologist’s diary.

This is a great way to learn about the mysterious jaguar, check it out today!
