Quick Tips

Shift+End to Delete a Line of Text

image

Here’s a quick shortcut for anyone who’s found themselves acting like a telegraph operator on their backspace key. You know what I’m talking about. You’ve just finished a line of text, it doesn’t look right, so you want to delete the whole line. “Ratta-tatta-ratta-ratta”, and your finger falls off…

There’s a better way! Simply put your cursor at the beginning of the line you want to delete and press Shift+End. This will cause the whole line to be selected, and all you have to do after that is press delete or backspace to finish the job! The best part is that because your cursor is already at the beginning of the line, all you have to do is type!

Deletion, simplified!

Computers 101

Myron from Rockaway, NJ asks:

I got this error message, “Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card.” Anything I can do?

Well, Myron, I hate to sound obvious, but did you try installing an updated driver for your video card?  If you did this and it didn’t work, please let me know in comments.  But really, this should solve your problem.

The first thing that I’d recommend is that you uninstall your existing video driver.  The reason that I’d suggest this is that you’re just starting fresh.  Sometimes updating doesn’t go like it should, so it’s good to just start from scratch.  You do this by opening your device manager.  The easiest way is to click on the Windows icon in the lower left of the screen and type “device manager” (you’ll type all of these phrases minus the quotation marks) into your search box.  Select the first one under Control Panel.

Once your device manager is open, select your video driver.  This will usually be found by expanding display adapters.  I’ll show you mine without even asking to see yours.

Right-click on the video driver and click “uninstall”.  Then reboot your computer.  When it boots back up you should have a fairly rudimentary display, but your “found new hardware” wizard should come up.  If it doesn’t, just repeat the process above, but click “update driver software” instead of uninstall.  Windows should then find your new driver and install it.  That should fix your problem.  If it doesn’t, let me know in comments and we’ll try something else.

Hope this helps.

MS Office

MS Office 2010: Still Having Trouble Locating Things on the Ribbon?

If you’ve recently switched from a menu-driven version of Office to Office 2010, then you may still be trying to adjust to the Ribbon.

I have found that for most people “adjusting to the Ribbon” means locating the items they frequently used in the menus.

During the course of an Office tip I’ll end up pointing out the new location of something, but what if you need to know right now?

Microsoft has put help for this situation out there.

One way they helped was the interactive guides that was discussed in a previous article.

Today I’d like to give you another option for finding your missing commands.

Get the info here!

Tip of the Day

Google Chrome Desktop Shortcuts

Like many others, my first browser was Internet Explorer, and I became accustomed to the easy webpage desktop shortcut procedure; one sorely missed in the newer breed of browsers. However, Chrome offers at least two different methods, one of which will also work in Firefox and Opera. In all three browsers, it’s easiest to begin on the page that will become a shortcut.

If you’ve never created a desktop shortcut in IE, under the File menu, click Send, and select Shortcut to Desktop.

Today's Feature

Spell Check in Firefox

http://imgsrv.worldstart.com/ct-images/firefox-spell-check.jpg

Most word processing programs have a spell-checker built right in, so what does one do for the web? I spend most of my time writing out form fields, contributing to forums and writing in blogs. Shouldn't there be a way to spell check in my browser?

There is, actually, but mysteriously enough, it's only for Mozilla Firefox. IE8 has yet to receive a built-in spell checker, but I assume that's not far off. However, a free spell checker is available for IE8 and you can learn more about it here.

In the meantime, let's learn how to enable the spellchecker in Firefox!

For a look at the Firefox spellchecker, click here.

Movie a Minute

I have brought you Book a Minute in the past, but now there is Movie a Minute!  Here you’ll find ultra condensed descriptions of movies that will take you a minute or less to read! The premise is that you could read the condensed version here and skip watching the movie, but I think they are really more geared towards people who have seen the movie and will get the ultra-condensed version’s humor.

To get started, just pick a movie title from the list and check out what they’ve written for the description. There is a large selection of different movies, from classic movies like All About Eve and Gone with the Wind to more recent movies like Lost in Translation and Hitch. You’ll even classic series like Rocky and Star Wars.

I read through all of the entries because curiosity got the better of me and so many of them are hilarious. Why don’t you check them out today?

System Shield Provides HARDCORE System Protection...

WITHOUT SLOWING YOUR PC DOWN!

100% PURE Protection. No Extra BS.

Get it Here for Just $9.97!

You Will NOT Find a Lower Price ANYWHERE!

OK - it's not the early '90's anymore. Every computer owner in the world knows that if you don't have an anti-virus program installed on your computer, you're absolutely, positively going to get a virus. And spyware. And hacked. This is no longer news, nor is it a 'maybe...' no - if you don't have it, you're risking much more than just the cost of fixing your computer.

You're also risking your financial stability and personal privacy as well; because once the hackers get in, or once a virus or spyware program compromises your computer, there's no going back. Again, this is not breaking news. So, like hundreds of millions of other computer users, you've got virus protection. The problem?

Most Security Software Slows Your System WAY Down!

Sound Familiar?

You're surfing the web. Maybe you're shopping, maybe you're socializing, gaming...whatever. All of the sudden your Anti-Virus messenger pops up in the middle of everything to let you know that it's stopped another threat. That's nice. You paid for it to do that...so WHY does it always seem to want a pat on the back?! Now you've been interrupted and your system is moving slower because it's resources are being HOGGED up by your security software.

Every single one of these expensive programs are CONSTANTLY giving you pop-ups and hogging up your speed and performance by running in the background. Some PC users who run high powered programs are FORCED to turn their security software off due to it's constant interfering with their system while running such programs.

THAT'S INSANE. THIS MUST BE STOPPED. THANKS TO IOLO...IT IS!

Be Protected from OVER 2 MILLION Threats and Viruses WITHOUT a hit on your system performance!

Meet SystemShield!

Like a ninja, this program is like a fly on the wall. That's not to say it's not POWERFUL or EFFECTIVE - because it is! We're talkin' SUPER PROTECTION.

However, this efficient security software is a hybrid that's always ready to attack threats and protect your system...all while sitting quietly in a small digital space and NOT USING UP YOUR RESOURCES. There's never been an anti-virus program quite like this - but there's sure to be MANY copy cats.

Oh, and just for your peace of mind - this program is Lab Certified AND a Microsoft Certified Partner. It's meant for Windows!

Is it Easy to Use? YOU BET!

Like any other security software, this program is as simple as installing it and letting it do the dirty work.

THE RUNDOWN

Ok, so you're probably wondering exactly why this security software works the way it does, and why all of the other companies have yet to come out with something this REVOLUTIONARY. Well, here's a quick rundown, taken directly from the Iolo site - this combination blends high-security features with cutting edge technology, and the results are amazing! Check this out!

Like a True Warrior, SystemShield Hunts Down and DESTROYS Security Threats and Viruses!

Regardless of the type of virus, from simple to complex - it stands ZERO CHANCE against System Shield. This is one of the most advanced programs on the market. Not only will the threats be taken care of, your system will be restored and it's resources instantly replenished - you will experience NO SLOWDOWN!

SUPER SECURITY and BEYOND!

Here's another piece of info that'll help you sleep better: once installed, this program runs a covert search to find entry points in your system through which viruses and threats can enter. It then proceeds to seal those areas, lock the digital iron doors, and throw away the key. Talk about an INGENIUS program!

It's Got YOUR Back!

Install the program and forget all about it. That's it. If there's anything that requires your immediate attention, System Shield will let you know and, following your prompts, will AUTOMATICALLY do what you tell it to do. Again, this is an anti-virus that FULLY protects you and only asks for your attention when it's giving you options. Wouldn't it be nice if the entire world worked like that?!

ALL OF THIS AWESOMENESS...RIDICULOUSLY EASY TO USE!

Check it out - see that toolbar? If you feel the need to go in and check things out for yourself, or if the program prompts you to open it..whatever - this toolbar will be with you wherever you're at.

Now, this anti-virus program requires VERY minimal participation from you, but isn't it nice to know that if you want to open it up, you'll always be greeted by a user friendly interface?

Want it for 67% LESS than You'd Pay at Iolo Directly?

Of course you do - that's why you're a subscriber at Worldstart! For today only, you can get this BRILLIANT anti-virus program that prides itself on NOT SLOWING YOUR SYSTEM DOWN for the AMAZING price of just $9.97! Free US SHIPPING INCLUDED! How's that for awesome?
