Correction: On 10-27 we printed a tip about the Windows Experience Index. The tip stated that the base score goes up to 5.9, when in actuality it goes up to 7.9. Sorry for any confusion.

Quick Tips

What Does that Program Do?

You probably know that if you hover over a program in your Toolbar or on your Desktop, it gives you the program name. Some programs like Google Chrome and Word also give you a description.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have this for all your Programs? Great news… if you have Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7, you can.

Right-click on a desktop shortcut or toolbar item and choose Properties. In the Properties dialog box, click the Shortcut tab. You’ll see a box marked Comment—go ahead and type your description there. In our tests here, we found that only application shortcuts (Chrome, Firefox, Outlook, etc.) included the Comments box, so this won’t work on all shortcuts.

Click OK.

There ya go. Now when you hover over the program, it has a description.

Everything You THOUGHT You Knew About Lanterns...

Is About to be Turned Upside Down!

Sure, Lanterns Are Convenient...

But This One Goes ABOVE AND BEYOND The Call of Duty!

30 LED BULBS! UNBELIEVABLY BRIGHT!

Opens and SWIVELS 360 Degrees!

Pull Out the Side Panels and CUSTOMIZE Your Lighting!

There's NEVER Been a More POWERFUL Lantern With THIS MANY Features Until Now!

Think You Have a Good Lantern?  THINK AGAIN!

So you're in the garage working on your car.  You've got your 9 LED lantern hanging beside you, and while it's emitting fairly sufficient light, you could probably use a few more LED's to be able to see better.  It'd also be nice if you could take one or both panels and angle them to better suit your lighting needs.  But who makes a lantern that allows you to customize your lighting?  Sounds like a pipe dream...

You're in the woods, at one with nature.  Camping with your family is one of your favorite things to do - but you need a SUPER lantern to compete with the Mother Nature's total darkness.  What do you do?  Walk around with that weak, yellow-bulbed lantern that you bought back in '86?  Good luck with that...Consider this: it's getting dark, and there's not much time left before it's totally pitch black outside.  One person is setting up the kindling for the fire, and placing rocks around the pit. Someone else is quickly trying to set the tent up.  You have one lantern.  What do you do?

If only you had a lantern that would allow you to angle the light in two different directions, you'd be all set!  But there's no such thing as something as AWESOME as that, right? WRONG!

The PERFECT Lantern is No Longer a Myth!

You're NOT GONNA BELIEVE THIS!  It's a 30 LED, 360 Degree Swiveling, absolute MONSTER of a lantern...and it's here to ROCK YOUR WORLD while LIGHTING IT UP!

How many times have you found yourself in need of a customizable lantern?  Maybe you've  never even thought of how convenient one can be, but you're about to find out!  Let's think about this: where would a BRILLIANT lantern like this come in handy?  Let me count the ways...

 Garage or Workshop

 Bedroom!

 Camping!

 Shed or Storage Unit

 ANYWHERE you'll EVER need light!

These Features REVOLUTIONIZE The Way We Think About Lanterns!

30 LED = UNBELIEVABLY BRIGHT!

Ever stare at the SUN?  Yeah, 30 LED's is kinda like that!  We're talkin' BLINDING light that'll carry across any room.  So lets just say you're in the dim garage working on a project that requires total vision and concentration.  You need a light to match that kind of job, and this one will do that and then some!

Oh, and with the convenient handle, you'll be able to hang it anywhere you want it...but we'll get to the other features in a little bit.  First, you need to understand the MAGNITUDE of brightness you're dealing with!

You know how bright 1 LED is...so think about what 30 of 'em will look like!  Bright white LED light will FLOOD any room - and if you're outside, prepare to be able to see a looooong way.

Each "panel" inside this lantern is riddled with 15 LED bulbs - one panel on each side.  So it doesn't matter what way it's turned, you'll have BEYOND SUFFICIENT lighting no matter what!

Adjustable, SWIVELING Panels!

As if having 30 LED bulbs isn't enough, the engineers at ThinkTank did something that's gonna BLOW YOUR MIND!  They took each side panel that comprise the 30 total bulbs, split it in half, and made each panel TOTALLY ADJUSTABLE by a FULL 360 DEGREES!

This is an absolutely BRILLIANT IDEA!  Now no matter what job lies ahead - whether it's working in the garage, flooding two areas at once for a dark project that involves multiple people, or simply lying in bed reading - you can ANGLE THE LIGHTS to COMPLETELY CUSTOMIZE your lighting!  There's NEVER been a lantern able to do this...UNTIL NOW!

No matter what conditions you're in, from well-lit to dim all the way to pitch black, and no matter what project you have at hand, you'll have ZERO PROBLEMS when it comes to providing your light source!  It's a miracle light!

Bright Enough for ANY Job, TOUGH Enough for Work!

This MONSTER is RUGGED!  It's exterior is comprised of HIGH-GRADE, super strong reinforced plastic!  It's no weakling - so if you bang it around a bit, or even drop it, it's gonna be fine!  This lantern was designed with workin' in mind, so you're not getting some dainty, weak, cheap product here.  You're getting a super-strong WORK TOOL that'll last you a VERY long time.

And although you probably already know this, remember LED is UNBELIEVABLY EFFICIENT!  You could leave this baby on for A DECADE STRAIGHT before the bulbs will EVER burn out.  And due to the efficient, ENERGY SAVING technology found in LED, your batteries will last 10X longer than with standard bulbs.  Did you catch that?  TEN TIMES LONGER BATTERY LIFE!

And speaking of that, this runs on 3 D batteries (not included).  It's got a secure and convenient compartment on the bottom of the lantern, and once the batteries are in - it's ready to rock! No assembly required, no messin' around!  Pop the batteries in, push the button, and LOOK OUT - IT'S ABOUT TO GET BRIGHT IN HERE!

So go ahead - push the button.  But be prepared to turn night into day!

AMAZING PRICE!

We were able to score a GREAT deal on these lanterns, so we're passing it along to you!  For today ONLY, this 30 LED, 360 Degree SWIVELING BEAST OF A LANTERN can be yours for just $21.97 with FREE US SHIPPING INCLUDED!  How's that for a deal that'll BRIGHTEN your life?!

AC Plug Folds in For Car Use and MAXIMUM Portability!

Chargers...EVERYWHERE!

You're used to it by now, right? You have a cell phone charger that plugs into the wall at home. You have an iPod charger that connects to your computer. You have a battery charger for your digital camera. How many others?

So let's say you're on a road trip and your iPod dies before you reach your destination. Oh, and your phone is down to one bar on the battery. To charge either one of these, you need to be at home where you have a wall outlet (or your computer for your iPod). What do you do? You drive in silence and turn your phone off. That certainly sucks, doesn't it?

Now You Can Charge ANYTHING...ANYWHERE!

The ZipKord USB AC/DC Power Adapter is an AMAZING new charger that allows you to charge your USB devices both at home AND in the car!

It's a PERFECT hybrid of two chargers that we ALL have to use to keep our devices charged. So now instead of having a bunch of them laying around, you can just keep one - and bring it with you EVERYWHERE!

Imagine NEVER worrying about your devices running out of battery power again - whether you're at home OR on the road!

How's it Work? LIKE A DREAM!

It's SIMPLE! As you can see from the picture above, there's an AC plug meant for charging through an outlet, AND there's a DC plug that goes directly into your cigarette lighter in your car!

Now, no matter where you are, your devices won't run outta juice! There's a single USB port on the top of this bad boy, so whatever USB device you have, it'll charge! All you need is your USB Power Cord that came with whatever device you're charging, then BAM! You're powering up your device!

WORKS ON ANYTHING THAT CHARGES VIA USB!

iPods & MP3 Players!

Cell Phones!

GPS!

Digital Cameras!

ANYTHING that charges via USB!

This thing is even iPhone 3G compatible! Talk about being up to date!

IT DOES WHAT? IT FOLDS!

As if this thing could get ANY better - it does! That wall outlet would be quite a pain, but guess what? IT FOLDS IN when you're not using it! So when you're charging in the car, you fold the AC plug in and it's like it's not even there! This is also PERFECT when you're traveling!

Maximum Storage, Maximum Portability, HUGE Power!

So what USB devices do you have? DOESN'T MATTER - it'll charge it up with speed! Whatever USB device you throw at it - it'll charge in no time! Oh, the green LED light will be lit up when you're charging a device, so you'll know it's working!

The PERFECT Charger at an AMAZING Price!

How much do you think you'd pay for one of these at your local box store, say Best Buy or Radioshack? Oh, somewhere around $30 AT LEAST! But not at Worldstart...

Today, this REVOLUTIONARY home AND car charger hybrid can be yours for just $12.31 with FREE US SHIPPING!

You better act fast, this price won't last forever and will go up soon!

32-Bit and 64-Bit Explained - Part One

32_bit_vs_64_bit_8

In response to multiple reader requests, we decided to attempt to explain – and, in my case, to understand–32-bit and 64-bit operating systems. In this first segment of a three part series, we’ll define some of the basic terms. The next segment will review speed, memory, hardware, and software. In the third installment, we’ll demonstrate how to learn which system is being run and, if it’s a 32-bit system, whether an upgrade is possible and practical. If this information affects you the same way it did me, it will be helpful, confusing, a cure for insomnia, or all three.

In one context, 32-bit and 64-bit refers to how a CPU (computer processor) handles information. These terms also indicate the number of bits that comprise a single data element (for example, a pixel in an image). In that case, when dealing with resource hogging data like images, audio, or video, there is a distinct advantage to a 64-bit system. However, when writing emails or text documents, the benefits of 64-bit may be less apparent.

What is a bit?

A bit (short for binary digit) is the smallest unit of digital information, represented by either 0 or 1. Arranging a series of bits in sequence creates a binary math language that the processing chips can understand. As a result, CPUs are identified by their ability to process these sequences (32-bit or 64-bit). Eight consecutive bits in such a sequence equals a byte (short for binary term). Large numbers of bytes are then combined to create kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, etc. To further understand these terms, and to learn how to make conversions, please see the article, Gigabyte/Megabyte Conversions.

Not confusing enough?

The terms, 32-bit and 64-bit indicate the width of the registers, which are storage areas within the computer. The registers can contain either the address location in the computer memory where data is stored, or the data itself. All computer data is processed using information represented in these registers.

Each instruction (the most basic computer command) can process the number of bits indicated in the registers. So, a 64-bit machine processes a 64-bit width register with each instruction. Likewise, a 32-bit machine processes a 32-bit width register per instruction. While it would seem that a 64-bit processor would naturally be faster, the number of instructions executed per cycle (the fundamental unit of time measurement in a device) indicates actual processing speed, so that may not always be the case.

It’s the combination of hardware and software elements which make up the computer architecture that determines processing speed. This will be discussed in part two of this series, where we’ll take a more in-depth look at processors, memory, and how hardware and software interact to improve (or–if not correctly balanced–reduce) overall performance.

MS Office

Finding Recent Documents in OpenOffice

Today I’d like to look at a very useful feature that is quite often overlooked… the Recent Documents list in the file menu.

Recent Documents works just like it does in your Windows Start menu.

It’s a list of the latest files to have been edited and to open one of them, you simply need to click the document name.

Instead of the old “File, Open choice then locate the file so that you can finally open it” routine try the File menu, Recent Documents sub-menu.

Tip of the Day

Troubleshooting Network Problems from Command Prompt

You don’t have to be an IT expert to troubleshoot pesky network and Internet connection problems.  All you need is the Command Prompt utility. Any computer users familiar with MS-DOS and Windows 3.1 recognize it. Well, that utility hasn’t gone away; it’s still around, just hidden in the background.

Here’s how to access it, and how to troubleshoot basic network problems from your computer.

Press the Windows key on your keyboard. Type the text cmd in the search box – in XP this is called “Run” – and press Enter.

Here’s what should appear:

Today's Feature

Claudia from Iowa asks:

I am a professional photographer. Is there any way to stop a site (foreign or otherwise) from posting your images and advertising them illegally as free wallpapers, screen savers, etc?

First things first. If it’s your photograph and you have the original copy with you, you automatically have the copyright for it. You don’t need a document to prove it. Just the original photograph will do you justice, because every photograph has embedded data like the camera used, the time, date and place, the settings on the camera, when the picture was taken and so on. However, if you were to post your original photography online and somewhere were to use it illegally or without your permission, you have room for caution. Here are the rules when you go about posting anything online…

1.Post low-res images: This not only gives you complete control over how your photograph should be used but also give your site’s visitor a very small photo that he can’t do anything about. And this means, posting images that are 72DPI and NOT 300DPI.

My Modern Metropolis

The funny thing about this is that on the same day two featured articles from it appeared in my inbox, one was from StumbleUpon, and the other was from Hunch. Each recommended I check out a certain gallery that was featured.

The first one was from StumbleUpon and was an awesome selection of artwork honoring Harry Potter. It was interesting to see so many beautiful artistic renderings of Harry Potter. You can check them out here.

The second one was from Hunch and was an interesting look into the life of a superhero called Story Behind an Aging Super Hero. It was quite interesting to see the image series, and there was a question and answer section afterwards that delved deeper into the meaning of the series. You can check it out here.

After experiencing those two sections, I decided I wanted to explore more of the site, so I decided that I would head to main page and see what else was featured. What I discovered was a vibrant and fresh selection of featured art.

Navigation is easy. There is a menu strip along the top with the following categories: Home, My Place, Metropolites, Blogs, Photos, Videos, Submit a Link, and About. You can scroll down the main page or watch the rotating image at the top of that section to see what is currently being featured. While I was there were a lot of interesting things being featured on the main page, like this awesome post on culinary manipulations. You can check it out here.

Creating a profile allows you to comment on, curate, and blog about your favorite art. To sign up for membership you need to click Sign Up and then fill out the form with your e-mail address and birth date, next you’ll create a password and fill in the reCaptcha to prove you’re human. Then head to the e-mail address that you’ve provided and click the activation link. Next, you’ll finish your profile by filling out the form that loads. Your other option to sign up is to login with your Facebook, Google, or Yahoo account.

After you’ve signed up, you can manage your account and personal stuff from My Place, and create your own blog. This is a very neat art site; I hope you’ll check it out today!

"Everyone Wants My Earbuds!"

Your Poor Ears Haven't LIVED - Till They've Tried On These Babies!

Bendy-z

Take One Part Absolutely Remarkable Sound, One Part Ultra-Comfort...

And You Get THESE Phenomenal Earbuds!

Noise Reduction! Extra Bass!

Sends Every Other Set Of Earbuds Cryin' For Their Mommas!

If you've ever tried to listen music with hard plastic earbuds, you've probably had the same gripes that I've had with 'em. Yeah, they're lightweight but the trouble is your ear has to be just the right size to fit them. You have to jam them in your ear - hoping and praying that they stay. But they always end up falling out... so you have to jam 'em so far into your ear that they're REALLY uncomfortable.

That's why I was so excited found the PERFECT solution! We've just come across an incredible set that sound GREAT (YES...they're STEREO, have EXTRA BASS & are NOISE REDUCTION! ) and are VERY comfortable.

Let's face it, if earphones aren't comfortable, who cares how they sound, cuz you'll never wear 'em to ever find out! Well, these stream-lined earphones really deliver not only on great sound but comfort too!

Here's why these Stereo Earbuds work:

Each earpiece features a soft silicone earpad and they will fit in almost any ear. They create a slight suction - so when you place the earpiece in your ear it stays there ...comfortably, and doesn't fall out!

These truly are a have a great set of earphones that you can take where ever you go! In fact, you can use these at your computer desk if you're working on your computer late at night or early in the morning and you need to keep the sound down.

And the cord is long enough (4 foot) without being too long so as to get tangled and in the way (another small point but something I've noticed as a problem with other earphones I've tried!)

And in case you were wonderin', this is the common plug (3.5 mm) that fits into the front and your computer and most other audio devices, like portable radios, laptops, cd /dvd/mp3 players, iPods etc.

Do NOT let the low price fool you on this. We just happened to get a great deal on these so we're passin' along the savings! Believe it or not, today these are just $8.31 and shipping in the US is FREE!

http://store.worldstart.com/product/6928

PS - At this price, might want to consider picking up 2 or three of these so you have one at your computer, one in the car and one you can stick in your pocket or purse for walks or bike rides!

Warning - This price is set to increase soon! Don't pay $14.97 for 'em later - grab 'em today!
